A profile of the Portuguese tourists who visit Brazil

Below, results of a survey conducted by Embratur (Empresa Brasileira de Turismo) to trace the profile of the American tourists who came to Brazil in 2002; to read more about this survey click here.
Portuguese have a clear preference for cities in Northeast of Brazil (Recife, Fortaleza, Salvador and Natal). This may be explained by the physical proximity (a flight from Europe to the Northeast can be up to ten hours shorter than to the South) and also by the cultural proximity (the Portuguese influence in Brazilian culture is strong in the Northeast, whereas in the southern States there was more mixing with other cultures, which immigrated more recently).
