Universities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Below, a list of universities and other superior learning institutions in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The list shows all public institutions, and a sample of the private institutions. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most developed States and Brazil and, in many senses, it is still the cultural capital of Brazil.

Public Universities

UFRJ - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, several faculties spread across the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Universidade Federal Fluminense. Campi in several cities, including Niterói, Angra dos Reis, Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio, Itaperuna, Macaé, Rio das Ostras, São João do Meriti and Volta Redona.
Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Rural University. Courses of Agronomy, Biology, Forests, Veterinary and other related. Situated about 80 km west from the city of Rio.
UNIRIO. Another University maintained by the Federal Government (independent from UFRJ).
UERJ - Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro. State University of Rio. Campi in Rio, Duque de Caxias, Ilha Grande, Nova Friburgo, Resende and São Gonçalo.
Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. Also known as Universidade Darcy Ribeiro. In Campos dos Goytacazes, north of the State.
IMPA - Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada. Institute of Pure and Applied Math. In the city of Rio.
IME - Instituto Militar de Engenharia. Center of formation of the engineers of the Army. One of the most respected schools of engineering in Brazil. In the city of Rio.
AMAN - Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras. School of the superior officials of the Army. In Resende, west of Rio. The name Agulhas Negras means Black Needles, a reference to sharp mountains which exist near that city.

Private Institutions

IBMEC. Respected courses of Finances, Business and Administration. Campi in the States of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
PUC RIO. Catholic University. PUC has independent campi in several States of Brazil. Most mentors of the recent economic policies in Brazil came from PUC Rio.
Estácio de Sá. The largest private University in Brazil, measured by number of students enrolled. Campi in all major cities of Rio, as well as in other four Brazilian States. Estácio de Sá was the founder of the city of Rio, back in 1565.
Universidade Gama Filho. Large University. Incentivates students to participate of sports events.
UniCarioca. Founded in 1990. Faculties are situated in the city of Rio.
Universidade Cândido Mendes.
UniverCidade.
Centro Universitário de Volta Redonda. University Center of Volta Redonda, situated near the border between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
