Morumbi is privately owned by Sao Paulo FC.
There are still doubts whether Morumbi will be the venue of the World Cup in the city of Sao Paulo.
The intention of all parties (FIFA, CBF, Government of Sao Paulo, and Sao Paulo FC) was to stage the opening match of the WC 2014 in Morumbi, because the city of Sao Paulo has advantages such as best hotel network, broadest internet and telecom connectivity, most connected airport, etc.
However, to bring Morumbi up to FIFA standards, Sao Paulo FC would have to spend R$ 650 million.
The club found that amount excessive, and presented another project, at a cost of about R$ 300 million, which would meet some FIFA standards, but not all. FIFA refused the project and informed that Morumbi was excluded of the World Cup.
However, given that there are not other alternatives, and given that Sao Paulo continues to present the best infrastructure in the country, there have been talkings to attempt to bring Morumbi back to the Cup.
As of today (August 2010), there is no definition in view.
