«Brazil in the World Cups
Brazil finished first in the South America group. Brazil and Argentina finished with the same number of points, but Brazil had a better goals balance.
This was the team which played the last match, against Venezuela (Brazil won by 3 x 0), in Belém, on October 12th 2005: Dida, Cafu, Lúcio, Juan and Roberto Carlos; Emerson, Zé Roberto (Juninho Pernambucano), Kaká and Ronaldinho Gaúcho (Alex); Ronaldo and Adriano (Robinho). Coach: Carlos Alberto Parreira. Assistant coach: Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo.
The biggest problem of coach Parreira is to choose which player to leave out of the team.
Parreira says that four out of these five can play: Kaká, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Ronaldo, Adriano and Robinho.
The goalkeepers are defined: Dida, Júlio César and Rogério Cenni. Marcos, the goalkeeper of the 2002 World Cup, is still playing in Palmeiras, and is as good as ever (but Parreira seems to have a personal preference for Dida).
Cafu is going to his fourth World Cup; he already holds the record of having played three final matches of World Cups, and can now improve on his mark.
Ronaldo, with 12 goals, is very close to setting a new record of number of goals (Muller, from Germany, has 14 goals); the problem to Ronaldo is that Adriano, who is also a center-forward, is playing very well, and may crowd Ronaldo out of the team.
The Brazilians are very optimistic.
