Confederations Cup 2013 – the best ever

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 will be held in Brazil, and will bring together eight National Teams: Brazil (host country), Spain (World Cup 2010 champion) and the champions of the six most important football confederations in the World.

The Confederations Cup started as a very low profile tournament. Saudi Arabia organized an inter-champions tournament in 1992 and 1995, and FIFA took it over in 1997; the Cups were staged every two years until 2005, and every four years since then.

The Confederations Cup used to be seen more as a check-up of the infrastructure of the host country than an important football event. On some occasions, important teams chose to decline from participating; less important countries like Australia, Mexico, Japan and Cameroon took the opportunities and became champion or runner-up.

This time it will be different. The FIFA 2013 Confederations Cup will be the best ever. The South Africa World Cup showed that nations from all continents are becoming stronger. As this event attracts more and more attention from media and public, teams are more and more eager to win it. And having a team well prepared for the Confederations Cup 2013 is a large step towards having the team prepared to win the World Cup 2014.

Brazil and Spain are already secured. Argentina may win the America Cup 2011 and be the representative from South America. England, Germany, Netherlands or Italy may win the Euro Cup 2012 and represent Europe. USA, Ghana, Japan and Australia stand goood chances of taking the other slots.

So, the schedule of the Cup could have Brazil x Ghana, Spain x Japan, England x USA and Argentina x Australia in the first round, and a match like Brazil x Spain or Argentina x England in the final.

Sixteen matches of such a level; talk about a thrilling Cup!
