Now that the Qualifying is over and all countries to participate in World Cup 2010 are defined, it’s time to start talk about bettings, odds, and favorites to win the World Cup.

FIFA just announced the ranking of the best countries in the year so far. Do betters agree with FIFA?

The table below shows who are favourites, according to betters of Ladbrokes, the most traditional betting house in England (table is online today, November 23rd; bets are accepted till December 4th).

According to them, Spain is the main favorite to win the World Cup, with odds of 4:1 (betters make US$ 4 for each US$ 1 they bet). Brazil is second, with slightly higher odds of 9:2 (or 4.5:1). Other relevant candidates to winning are, in order: England, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Holland, Portugal and France. Countries with the highest odds (not shown in the table above) are North Korea (350:1), Honduras and New Zealand (both with 500:1).

Below, the current betting odds at William Hill, one of the major houses in the United States. Among the top ten favorites, the only difference between Americans and British betters is at 8th and 9th position, where France and Portugal switch positions.

Below, the odds at Sports Betting, another major American house; also, no change among the top favorites:

A few remarks about these odds: all but one ex-champions are among the favorites (the only exception is Uruguay); Spain, the top favorite so far (Spain is also favorite according to other parties, such as Goal and Eurosport), is top of the FIFA rankings, current European champion, and qualified to the Cup winning ten out of ten matches (in a group which included also Turkey, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Estonia and Armenia); Brazil, as usual, is among the top favorites (not surprisingly, as Brazil finished first in the Qualifying, with three rounds in advance); Argentina had a very difficult time to secure a slot in the Cup, but also, as usual, ranks among the favorites.

How accurate are these odds? In 2006, the absolute favorite was Brazil, but the team failed long before the finals; the same happened in 2002, when France was favorite, and in 1998, when Argentina was favorite.

The History of World Cups show that not always the favorite wins, and one of the “usual suspects” take the title.

England placed before Germany and Argentina etc… !!!You must be dreaming ! You cannot win a world cup with the likes of TERRY , Gerard and Lampard . You have one exellent player ( STRIKIER from Manchester ) and nothing else / you do not even have a solid goalie…
England will struggle in the group and will face an early exit . GOOD NEWS : Beckam will not play otherwize more trouble . The world cup will be won by a South American team . Other top favorites are Germany , Holland , Spain . Watch out for SERBIA and U S A .
England ( historically ) are ranked as big time losers in the world cup and it won’t be any different this time . I give England credit for its history , great fans and stadiums , but they are anti – talented !!!
ENGLAND actually invented soccer and should had won the world cup at least 5 times by now ………….mark my words : USA will win it before England !

Spain will win it. there is no doubt about it. they have the best players and the best team work. notice how all the spanish player play for spanish clubs, (with the exception of 2) this mean all this players know each other. most of them play for the same teams (barcelona, real madrid and villareal) also they have experience player with past world cup experience like puyol and Xavi hernandez. i doubt USA will do much but they might surpirce every one. also i am sure a african team will make it to quater finals for sure. also mexico won’t get far (sorry to my family in mexico) they have decent player and no team work, and their defence will fail them. brazil like always is a top favorite just hope they don’t get full of them selfs and make a mistake. portugal, great team, great players, will see what happens, fpr other south american teams i don’t see much, argentina and chile strugle to get there. and finaly itali. not much to say about them, will see what happens.
    GO SPAIN

You guys are all dreaming, ITALY will repeat as CHAMPIONS. Everybody comes to Seria A, to learn how to play! Then gain fame and fortune, and then go to other countries to play. Also hopefully US will place in the top five.

  7. Rawiri Says:

What you are all forgetting is European teams are crap outside Europe, never winning so I’d be backing Brazil. There will be some upsets along the way. Watch out Italy; and Cesare fyi players go to Seria A for money, the best club football to watch is and always has been in England.

    NZ brazil final lol

I go for germany! It s good that they are not favourite to win, so they dont have pressures on their shoulders and play just as they always do..a good football. You can not put a good team down. For those who don’t know the virtues of Germans…you better try to consider living in Germany. The England and their media make the footballers big. But it is not the way it is in Germany. They play there on the field as a team, and never as an individual talent. They can be from zero to hero.
