Taxis in Johannesburg

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

TV Globo aired tonight a report about taxis in Johannesburg.

Most taxis are actually mini-vans; drivers pick up and drop off passengers wherever they want.

To communicate with taxi drivers, potential passengers must know a kind of body code; by moving fingers, wrist and arms, passengers signify to the driver where they want to go, and then the driver decides whether he will stop or not.

This video shows a passenger learning the code.

The Johannesburg Government publishes manuals teaching the Taxi Code to foreign visitors:

When it comes to taxis, Brazil is much better prepared than South Africa.

World Cup in the Dark

electricity-power-south-africaFor some time now, South Africa have been facing a crisis in Power supply (see note by The New York Times from 2007, and by The Economist from 2008), and Johannesburg has been submited to a rationing of electricity; each week, a sector of the city goes without electricity.

With winter approaching (in the Southern Hemisphere, winter lasts from July to September), and as the wheels of the World Cup Economy start to spin, the consumption of energy tends to increase, and matters get worse.

Yesterday (May 17th 2010), Eskom, the South African utility company (7th largest in the World), issued a warning (the image to the left is the cover of newspaper The Star, issue May 18th 2010):

South Africa’s electricity company expects to be under pressure during the FIFA World Cup.

State-owned Eskom says it will regularly update South Africans on supply during the tournament, which starts June 11, and ask them to turn off some appliances if power runs low.

Under the worst circumstances, South Africans will be asked to turn off everything but one TV – so they can continue to get updates – and one light.

The utility says “although electricity supply is expected to be sufficient over this period, cold winter temperatures combined with high electricity demand is likely to place Eskom under additional pressure”.

soccer-city-lightsAt the same time that citizens are asked to save energy, the lights of the Soccer City are kept full lit 24 hours a day (photo).

And will Brazil be ready to supply power to the World Cup 2014?

Today, Brazil has no shortage of power; however, the country is growing fast and new projects are delayed. This is another point FIFA should pay attention to.

Royal Football Federation of Spain.

Main players: Casillas (best goalkeeper in the World in 2009), Xavi Hernandez and Fernando Torres.

FIFA ranking (April 2010): #1. Spain was champion of Euro Cup 2008, beating Germany in the final match, and is one of the favourites to win the World Cup 2010.

Spain finished first of their Group in the European Qualifying (arguably the toughest of all European groups), winning all ten matches, against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Turkey, Belgium, Estonia and Armenia.

Spain is in Group H of World Cup 2010, and will play the first three matches against: Switzerland (June 16th), Honduras (June 21st) and Chile (June 25th). It is very likely that Spain will finish first of their group, and there is a possibility that Brazil finish second of theirs; in such case, Brazil and Spain would face each other right after the Groups Stage, and one of these countries would return home after only four matches.

Spain Team Roster:

Jorginho, the bad guy of the Brazilian team

Friday, May 14th, 2010

It may seem to many casual watchers that coach Dunga is in a permanent bad humor mood. However, Dunga himself and several of his current and past fellow workers say that, outside the pitch, he is a good humored, easy going guy.

To journalists who follow the Brazilian team, the real bad guy of the staff is Jorginho, whose official position is “auxiliar técnico”, or “techical assistant”. Jorginho is the guy to the right side of Dunga in most interviews, trainings or any other event related to the Brazilian team.

In practice, what Jorginho does very often is to defend Dunga against criticizers; this is similar to what happened in 1994, when coach Parreira (also much criticized) had Zagallo to defend him.  Last week, when the Brazilian players for  2010 were announced, Dunga was much calmer than usual, and Jorginho took for himself the task of defending the choices made by them (and there is no doubt that Dunga listened to Jorginho’s opinions before defining the roster).

jorginho

Jorginho was a successful player, having been in the Brazilian team champion of the World Cup 1994; he played in Flamengo and in several important teams in Germany.

Dunga and Jorginho have been friends since 1982, when they played in the sub-20 Brazil team, and won the World Title in 1983 (Dunga and Jorginho, along with Bebeto, were appointed as rising stars of that tournament).

After retiring from the fields, Jorginho started a short career as coach. When Dunga became coach of the Brazilian team, the first person he called to his staff was Jorginho.

Jorginho is not only a member, but also a founder and current President of the NGO Atletas de Cristo (Athletes of Christ), a group of Evangelicals which congregate several Sports people in Brazil. He said in an interview that only after finding Jesus did he manage to quit alcoholism and become a successful man.

In the Brazilian team, two of the most important players, Lucio and Kaká, are member of the group; the influence of the group is stronger, though, and explains why the entire team was praying on their knees after recent victories.

Brazil: from now until the kick off

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Coach Dunga announced the roster of Brazilian players for the World Cup 2010.

Until May 21st, all players must show up at Granja Cumari, the CBF training center in Rio de Janeiro. On the 22nd, the team flies to Curitiba, in the Southern State of Paraná, where they will stay for five days training at the stadium of Atletico Paranaense.

Curitiba is one of the host cities of the World Cup 2014; CBF chose Curitiba because the latitude of the city is nearly the same as the cities in South Africa where Brazil will play, hence having the same temperatures.

On May 26th, Brazil will fly to South Africa. Brazil will stay at the Hotel Fairway, in Randburg, close to Johannesburg. Not much was informed about this training period, but Dunga already said he won’t repeat the mistakes of the World Cup 2006, and one such mistake was the excessive freedom of the players.

CBF announced that between May 26th and June 11th, Brazil will play two friendly matches; the countries or teams which will play these friendlies are not known yet (however, there are rumors that the South Africa team asked Brazil to be one such country; South Africa is coached by Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, who said that, because his players didn’t have to play the Qualifyings, they missed opportunities to face stronger teams during the preparation).

On June 15th, Brazil plays the first match, against North Korea, in Johannesburg.

On June 20th, Brazil plays against Ivory Coast, in Johannesburg.

On June 25th, Brazil plays against Portugal, in Durban.

After then, nobody knows where Brazil will go.
