Serra da Capivara National Park: staff is laid off for lack of funds to pay salaries.
On November 1st 2005, archeologist Ničde Guidon, co-manager of the Parque Nacional da Serra da Capivara, announced that 214 employees would be laid off, because the Ministry of Environment did not release funds for maintenance of the Park. Serra das Capivaras is the largest archaelogic site in the world.
November pay roll is R$ 190 mil (about US$ 80,000). The employees said that, for a while, they will work as volunteers, to prevent the destruction of the Park.
