In the 1998 Cup, Romário arrived in France with a bruise. After a few weeks drama, Romário was dismissed. When the name of his substitute was announced, everyone (including himself) was surprised: Emerson. He didn't play a minute, but he made his name for the Cup of 2002.
In 2002, Emerson was rostered from the beginning, and was expected to be a principal. However, only a few days before the first match, in a playful match, he performed as a goalkeeper and injured his shoulder. He was dismissed, and Ricardinho was called to replace him. The same player who had been the last one to arrive in France was the first one to leave from Korea.

Emerson is known for his tactical discipline and physical strenght. When Cafu is not playing, Emerson is usually the captain of the Brazilian team.
